Before you bring the casserole

Bringing someone a meal is a familiar way to say, “I’m here.”

Before you turn on the oven, a quick check-in can tell you what they would want.

1. insight

A favorite meal may not be a favorite right now.

Cancer and treatment can affect appetite, taste, and smell, changing what feels appealing or manageable.

An untouched meal is not a measure of someone’s gratitude. Give them room to change their mind, eat later, or say that food is not what they need today.

The goal is to offer help without making someone feel responsible for your effort.

2. practical Tips

Tip 1: Ask before you cook, with two clear options.

Instead of “What can I bring?” try: “Would soup or pasta sound good this week? Neither is fine, too.”

Ask about allergies and anything their care team has told them to avoid. Those decisions stay with them and their team.

Tip 2: Make delivery easy to receive.

Agree on a time when someone can receive and put away the food. Use containers that do not need to come back, and include ingredients and storage or reheating instructions.

Separate the meal from a visit: “I can drop it off without staying. No need to host.”

Food is one way to help. It does not have to be the only one.

The thoughtful part is not the recipe. It is leaving room for what someone needs.
