When you cannot be there in person

When someone you love has cancer, distance can make you feel helpless.

You may not be able to sit beside them or handle the next errand. But you can still offer support that feels steady, practical, and personal.

1. insight

Distance changes how support is delivered. It does not make that support less meaningful.

The most helpful gesture is not always the biggest one. Often it’s something dependable: a check-in that asks for nothing back, a delivery ordered on a hard day, one task taken off the list entirely.

You do not have to be nearby to make someone feel less alone.

2. practical Tips

○ Tip 1: Create one steady point of contact.

Rather than waiting for the right moment, pick a rhythm and keep it. A short message every Sunday, or a check-in the day after treatment.

Say plainly that no reply is needed: “Thinking of you today. No response needed.”

○ Tip 2: Own one task from where you are.

Pick something specific you can handle at a distance – coordinate a meal, line up a local service, keep family updated, arrange delivery of something they have asked for.

A specific offer saves them the work of deciding what to ask for.
