When your body feels unfamiliar

Cancer can change how your body looks, feels, and moves.

Even when you understand why those changes happened, it can still take time to recognize yourself in them.

1. Insight

Body image is not only about appearance. It can also affect identity, confidence, privacy, and how comfortable you feel around other people.

You can appreciate what your body has carried you through and still miss how it looked or felt before. Those feelings can exist together.

There is also no requirement to turn every scar or change into a symbol of strength.

Sometimes it is simply a change you are still learning to live with.

2. Practical Tips

◦ Tip 1: Start with comfort, not confidence.

Feeling confident may be too much to ask on some days. Instead, try asking, “What would help me feel more comfortable today?” The answer might be softer clothing, a head covering, a familiar skincare routine, or nothing new at all.

◦ Tip 2: Keep one boundary ready for body-related comments.

Even well-intended questions can feel personal. A simple response can protect your energy: “I’m still adjusting, and I’d rather not talk about it today.”
